In the course “Sustainable Design & Development” with Professor Chris Haddox, we were tasked with redesigning the defunct Mountaineer Mall located in Morgantown, West Virginia. Our goal was to imagine an innovative, sustainable building in place of a traditional shopping center.
We reviewed the existing building as well as Morgantown’s urban planning codes to create a plan for a new facility in its place.

My final presentation map represents a sustainable mixed-use development in place of the Mountaineer Mall on Greenbag Road. I custom illustrated each building’s plan and arranged the complex according to user needs.
My plan features a large arts & culture center, regionally specific retail options, green housing and lodging options, and natural features incorporated throughout. A stormwater drainage canal runs the length of the property. Featured images come from other developments in the Appalachian region, including the Capitol Market and Brawley Walkway in Charleston.

The project required a strong knowledge of local retail demand as well as green building and development codes. This was my only foray into urban planning as a field, however, it was a worthy experiment as I enjoyed researching urbanism while working on this map.
